Kyoto has many temples and shrines, and my friend who used to visit Kyoto every year recommended this temple to me. Nanzenji was a buddhist temple Northeast of Kyoto station. It had a very calm, relaxed atmosphere and was not crowded at all. The temple was destroyed completely by fire 3 times and the current one was built more than 400 years ago.
After buying a ticket I had to take my shoes off and put on slippers to get in. There was a tearoom near the entrance but it required a separate ticket so I skipped it.
The inside was very peaceful and serene. It was also quiet so slowly walking around the temple felt amazing. It was a great getaway place from all the crowd.
There were beautiful gardens inside the complex.
I had been to multiple temples and shrines in Kyoto and after Fushimi Inari Taisha this one was close second. I loved how peaceful it was. There was not much to do and the complex wasn’t very large but sitting in front of the garden and just staring for a while was nice.
