Chilli crab was one of the signature Singapore dish, and there were many locations that served the dish. I decided to visit Momma Kong’s since it was located in Chinatown, close to the hostel I was staying at. There were some other restaurants (more expensive) that serve chilli crab and many also choose to visit hawker centers (much cheaper).
The decor was very modern, and there were many tourist in the restaurant. The menu on the wall was all English as well. It felt more like a cafe than a restaurant.
I ordered a few minutes after being seated, and received the barley drink right away. It was very sweet and rich.
After 10 minutes the chilli crab came. The dish looked huge! The chilli flavour was very strong, and the crab meat was moist and soft. The buns were sweet and tasted similar to doughnuts.
I wasn’t very thorough with de-shelling process so the portion wasn’t too large. I did feel very full near the end.
Thoughts
It was quite expensive, and I probably wouldn’t have the dish again, but I did enjoy it as a local specialty. I hear other dishes such as pepper crabs tend to be favoured by locals over chilli crabs, so I would try those next time.
